Prominent upper teeth – The upper teeth can stick out affecting the aesthetics of the smile. This can be caused by the position of the teeth and/or the position of the upper and lower jaws. In growing patients, this can be managed with a functional brace of which there are various types. As adults, we also have several solutions to achieve a beautiful smile.
Management may require a combination of braces and surgery. The specialists at Heaton Mersey Orthodontic Centre will carefully assess this and advise accordingly.
An overjet, sometimes called protrusion, is when the upper front teeth stick out noticeably further than the lower teeth. This can happen for a number of reasons. Genetics often play a role, as the shape and size of the jaws can be inherited. If the upper jaw grows too far forward or the lower jaw sits too far back, the teeth may not meet properly. In other cases, the problem is caused by the position of the teeth themselves rather than the jaw. Childhood habits such as thumb sucking, prolonged dummy use, or tongue thrusting can also push the upper teeth forward over time.
An overjet can affect more than just the look of a smile. Protruding teeth are more vulnerable to accidental damage, especially during activities like sports. They may also cause difficulties with biting and chewing certain foods, and in some cases can contribute to speech problems, such as lisps. In severe cases, an overjet may place strain on the jaw and make the lips harder to close comfortably, which can affect facial balance. Correcting an overjet not only improves the appearance of the smile but also protects the teeth, supports better function, and enhances overall confidence.
Organise Your Visit“My brother Jack and I would like to say a very, very big thank-you for all the work you have done to make our teeth look really brilliant. When I had my braces removed I couldn’t believe the difference to my teeth (I can’t stop smiling now and I’m not worried about showing off my teeth).”
“2 years later, HMOC and Dr. Bhatti have given me the perfect smile, along with a new sense of confidence. Lovely people, excellent customer service and genuinely supportive before, during, and after my treatment! Forever grateful, I’d recommend HMOC to anyone and everyone!”
