This is where there is excessive vertical overlap of the front teeth. Treatment may involve removable, fixed braces or aligners. Teeth can be worn and may also require repairs such as composite bondings, crowns, or veneers.
A deep bite happens when the upper front teeth cover too much of the lower front teeth when biting down. This can be caused by a variety of factors. Genetics play a role, as jaw size and shape are often inherited. Small lower jaws or larger upper jaws can lead to excessive overlap. Crowding of the teeth, especially in the lower arch, may also push teeth into a deeper bite. In some cases, habits such as thumb sucking in childhood or abnormal swallowing patterns (like tongue thrusting) contribute to the development of a deep bite. Uneven tooth wear or missing teeth can also worsen the problem over time.
A deep bite isn’t just about appearance—it can cause several functional problems. Excessive overlap puts extra pressure on the lower front teeth, leading to wear, chipping, or damage to the enamel. It may also irritate or damage the gums behind the upper front teeth, causing discomfort. In some patients, a deep bite places stress on the jaw joints, which can lead to jaw pain or headaches. Beyond the health concerns, a deep bite can make the smile look “short” or the lower face appear unbalanced. Correcting it helps protect the teeth, improves comfort, and creates a more attractive, balanced smile.
At Heaton Mersey Orthodontic Centre, a deep bite can be corrected effectively with the right treatment, protecting your teeth, improving comfort, and giving you a confident, balanced smile.
Organise Your Visit“My brother Jack and I would like to say a very, very big thank-you for all the work you have done to make our teeth look really brilliant. When I had my braces removed I couldn’t believe the difference to my teeth (I can’t stop smiling now and I’m not worried about showing off my teeth).”
“2 years later, HMOC and Dr. Bhatti have given me the perfect smile, along with a new sense of confidence. Lovely people, excellent customer service and genuinely supportive before, during, and after my treatment! Forever grateful, I’d recommend HMOC to anyone and everyone!”
