A crossbite is where the upper teeth rest inside the lower teeth. If it is at the front it is called an anterior crossbite and if it is at the back it is called a posterior crossbite. Crossbites can cause issues with the wear of the teeth and jaw joint problems as well as making the smile look narrow. In addition, you may find the lower face looks unbalanced.
Heaton Mersey Orthodontics will assess your crossbite on an individual basis and consider the possible cause before recommending the most suitable treatment option.
A crossbite can develop for many reasons, often from a mix of genetics, jaw growth, and habits. It may be inherited, caused by uneven jaw development, or linked to issues like baby teeth falling out too early, adult teeth erupting in the wrong position, or crowding. Childhood habits such as thumb sucking, dummy use, or tongue thrusting can also contribute, while long-term mouth breathing due to enlarged tonsils, adenoids, or allergies may affect how the jaws grow and lead to bite problems.
A crossbite is more than just a cosmetic concern. When the teeth don’t meet correctly, it can affect both dental health and facial balance. Crossbites often cause uneven wear on the teeth, which may lead to chipping or long-term damage. They can also place extra strain on the jaw joints, sometimes causing discomfort, clicking, or headaches. In addition, a crossbite can make the smile appear narrow and, in some cases, give the lower face an unbalanced look.
Understanding the underlying cause of a crossbite is essential, because it helps your orthodontist choose the most effective treatment. At Heaton Mersey Orthodontic Centre, we carefully assess each case to find the root cause and design a personalised plan for correction.
Organise Your Visit“My brother Jack and I would like to say a very, very big thank-you for all the work you have done to make our teeth look really brilliant. When I had my braces removed I couldn’t believe the difference to my teeth (I can’t stop smiling now and I’m not worried about showing off my teeth).”
“2 years later, HMOC and Dr. Bhatti have given me the perfect smile, along with a new sense of confidence. Lovely people, excellent customer service and genuinely supportive before, during, and after my treatment! Forever grateful, I’d recommend HMOC to anyone and everyone!”
