Deep Bite

This is where there is excessive vertical overlap of the front teeth. Treatment may involve removable, fixed braces or aligners. Teeth can be worn and may also require repairs such as composite bondings, crowns, or veneers.

Causes of a Deep Bite

A deep bite happens when the upper front teeth cover too much of the lower front teeth when biting down. This can be caused by a variety of factors. Genetics play a role, as jaw size and shape are often inherited. Small lower jaws or larger upper jaws can lead to excessive overlap. Crowding of the teeth, especially in the lower arch, may also push teeth into a deeper bite. In some cases, habits such as thumb sucking in childhood or abnormal swallowing patterns (like tongue thrusting) contribute to the development of a deep bite. Uneven tooth wear or missing teeth can also worsen the problem over time.
